special needs and high-risk students to an interest in mathematics,
science and technology by providing "hands-on/minds-on"
learning experiences.
"Being a special needs teacher for 22 years in the Forest Hills Public
School District in Grand Rapids, Michigan, made me keenly aware of the
lack of motivation and self-esteem by many special needs students.
Often these students are not encouraged to participate in many educational
programs because of their disabilities.
It was because of these factors, I created a program
that can change the attitudes and perceptions of these students to love
learning, especially as it relates to science, mathematics and technology."

About the Foundation
Space is Special was created in 1989 and since that time
has served several thousand special needs students from across the country. Students lives
have been changed by their experiences in the program which motivates them to go beyond their perceived capabilities.
The learning is conducted in an atmosphere to simulate real life experiences - teamwork,
leadership skills, listening, communications, decision making, priority setting and
career awareness.

Space Is Special works with U.S. Space Camp to offer a special Space Academy Program in
Huntsville, Alabama, in which the special needs students can participate with other
student groups from all over the world in exciting space challenges.
